Hauptwerk Application Notes

Mapping for Hauptwerk Alt Mappings

Alt #Description
Plain (alt 0)VST Link - 2 second decays, VST both sides. Stops - all front, no non-note
Alt 1is something I play live with from the Rodgers console.
Alt 2(wants Oxygen61) - 2 second decays Oxygen61/VST in, ASIO out
Alt 3(wants 61es) - 2 second decays, Not VST, 8 Gb

At least for the Rotterdam Organ, I needed to change the Sonar sample rate to 48,000 for the organ to be in tune.

Set up VST plugin

Working with the Free version of Hauptwerk pipe organ.

When connecting with an external keyboard, it appears than MIDI channel 1 is pedals, channel 2 is Great, and channel 3 is Swell.

When using VST plug in, this is just something that passes data to and from the Hauptwerk executable. So The Hauptwerk app must be up and running.

Had success mapping like this:

Hauptwerk App Settings:

MIDI IN Ports
Hauptwerk VST Link to Console MIDI IN
MIDI OUT ports
Hauptwerk VST Link to Sequencer MIDI OUT

Audio Outputs
Main Audio output device Hauptwerk VST Link

Organ Stop/Coupler/Tremulant Switches and Pistons/Buttons

055 Comb Piston: Gt thumb 1 to
MIDI IN port Hauptwerk VST Link
   MIDI channel (Chan 02)
   On Note 024 Oct 0 note C
** Did this so that I can play Great with MIDI channel 2, and thumb presets go with channel 2

060 Comb Piston: Sw thumb 1 to
MIDI IN port Any enabled port
   MIDI Channel (Chan 3)
   On Note 024 Oct 0 note C
** Can play Swell with MIDI channel 3

075 Rev Piston FF gen comb
MIDI IN port Hauptwerk VST Link
   MIDI channel 2
   On Note 033 Oct 0 note A

076 Rev piston PP gen comp
MIDI IN port Hauptwerk VST Link
   MIDI channel 3
   On Note 035 Oct 0 note B

Sonar X2:

Made Synth track. Keyboard standard config in, output to Hauptwerk VST, MIDI channel 2 (to play Great)

Then I mapped some of the MIDI keyboard keys to certain functions:

Purchase Basic Edition

Purchased Basic edition, arrived approximately 5/2/2014.

Hauptwerk VST plugin not visible in Sonar X2 Producer. It seemed to fail when I tried to open another Cakewalk project while one using the Hauptwerk VST plugin was loaded. I shortened the Directory name that the Hauptwerk VST dll was located in, and this seemed to help. But noticed that if the project already has a VST plugin loaded, it gives the same error message when loading another one.

Had some success trying to get stop selections to be recorded, by enabling MIDI output on the Hautwerk VST synth, then recording it.

In the “Registration” control panel, accessible with View → Large Floating Control Panels → Registration, was able to use “Master Gen” by setting stops, then click “Setter” then click one of the numbers 1 to 20 (then unclick “Setter”). Although helpful, the “Scoped” buttons allow setting of stops of just sections (such as Great, or Swell), but for my purposes, probably the all-in-one Master Gen should suffice.

I mapped buttons from a MIDI keyboard to 1 through 9. #9 basically duplicates the FF settings on the St. Anne's.

#1 sounds decent. On Great: Mixture IV, Clear Flute, Principal, Liebrich Gedact, Open Diapason Small On Pedal, all but Trombone On Swell, Oboe, Salicet, Geigen Prinicpal, Clarinet, Viola De Gamba, Voix Celestes, Picoolo, Flauo Macico, Rohr Flote, Swell Octave

I “accidentally” mapped the buttons from the Oxygen61 keyboard, and they turned out to be Patch select buttons. This is a good thing, because Sonar keeps track of what the patch should be at any given part of the song.

The only tricky part was to make sure that the output channel of the track where I am recording the patch changes, (in my case 2) matches the channel in Hauptwerk that is expecting the patch changes.

Milan Organ Recommendations

Hello Dan,

I'd suggest having a good listen to our Metz Cavaille-Coll demos, this is probably the most aggressive organ we have:

http://www.milandigitalaudio.com/instruments/symphonic/1903-notre-dame-de-metz-cavaill-coll/?back=Instruments - $799

You can also view several other instruments for Hauptwerk at www.hauptwerk.com/instruments and sort by various options to narrow down what you may be interested in.

You are probably referring to our Salisbury Willis organ or the Bovenkerk Hinsz organ, both come in 3 volumes so you can start with volume 1, then upgrade later if you want to expand the organ. Volume 3 for each features the complete organ (volumes 1 and 2 must also be purchased in order to use volume 3).

Thanks again and I hope this helps!

Best regards, Brett Milan

Organ Research

Doing research about a possible additional organ to select. downloaded “Palace of Arts Budapest”. Samples are quite good, but it is annoying because the stop buttons show up, for those stops not purchased.

Steendam is apparently the organ that Gert has played. The photo in 1997 shows square features, but Gert's shows rounded ones. The Steendam organ only has a few stops. Gert's recordings of this organ sound better to me than other player's recording. 23+10 ranks (10 that aren't really on this organ) 233 Euro

Assigning Sibelius to use Hauptwerk

Working on assigning Sibelius tracks to play Hauptwerk. Had problems because regardless of having separate channels for Organ Left and Right, both went to same Hauptwerk keyboard. Fix was to “Go to the Playback page of Preferences and switch off 'Use same slot for all staves of keyboard instruments'.”

To answer your questions, Franic:

1: Why can't I assign to these commands a meaningful name in
the Playback Dictionary (eg: +Flauto 8': Control 48,1; -Flauto
8': Control 48,0 etc.)? Don't they send a command like ~C48,1
on the Channel of the staff?

If you're wanting to send a MIDI controller to a specific value, I'd suggest you define your own word menu that includes items like “Flute 8'~C48,1” instead. This will print “Flute 8'” visibly on the score and hide the “~C48,1” after it, which will look correct and send the MIDI message you need to send.

2: How can I assure that the three staves are assigned to
Channel 1 (Great Organ), 2 (Pedal) and 3 (other manual)?

Go to the Playback page of Preferences and switch off 'Use same slot for all staves of keyboard instruments'.

3: Is it possible *in the same score*, when the two hands
play on the same manual, have the same Channel on both staves
and when the two hands play on different manuals, different
Channels? This happens often in a score in the organ literature.

You'd really need to build a sound set file or a Manual Sound Set to set this up, and then use instrument changes to switch between the different sounds on any staff.
