 Replaced timing chain because the clicking/clanging seemed to be coming from exactly where the upper camshaft gears were located. Reassembled car, clanging still there.

 Hired George to help reassemble car. He took engine out of car. Didn't replace much because most parts seemed OK.

+Installed VVVT Solenoid. Possibly some changes, but the clanging remains. It might even be not quite as good as the original solenoid when applying 12V or 14V.

+There are 3 o-rings on a "snout" which plugs into the back of the Intake Camshaft Gear. They are hard to find.

+Initially I thought that these o-rings were too loose, but I didn't think about the fact that the o-rings slide back and forth on their **inside** diameters. The outside diameter just seem to match the inside of the intake camshaft gear.

+Altima had terrible clunking and poor transmission performance. Checked CVT Automatic transmission fluid, it was mostly gone from dipstick.
+Discovered pin hole in transmission cooler rubber hose, fluid had been slowly leaking out of it. Replaced for $4.51.
